so our chicks are about 2 months old, i know the general consensus is that you know they are roosters when they start to crow, but i just feel there has to be some behavioral / developmental difference that we might observe before this happens. are there ?

Re: roosters ?
Thu, September 18, 2008 - 12:18 PMMy roosters all started "facing off" with each other before they started crowing.
We reverse culled them, waiting for them all to establiish dominence, and then keeping the bottom of the pecking order.

Re: roosters ?
Sat, September 20, 2008 - 1:24 AMhm, all my chickens 'face off' with each other, trying to get taller, fluffing the neck and sometimes putting the feet forward. i suppose they could all be roosters, but that would be really unfortunate as we've become quite attached already.

Re: roosters ?
Tue, September 23, 2008 - 7:57 PMmine face off, but usually the first to run is the female, you will see three, face off, the first to run is the female, hold her back and let the other two begin another trio, soon you will see (hopefully) a pattern, the ones that don't let down, but get 'beat' down, are the males. I cull pretty heavy so I try to work my schedule around the early stages of growth.
This has worked for me but I seem to have a lot more time watching them in the early stages, not sure how it would go if I had a job and outside work with chickens to raise. I may have to establish a different method.
