i am growing sweet peas ( the flowers) for the first time.
i have read the seeds are toxic, and we wanted to plant them along our chicken fence....but we don't want to poison the birds
any body know if the birds will eat them and if they will be toxic to them as well?

I plant sweet peas around my garden, for looks, each season when they die off and I'm rotating crops, I let my chickens in to peck whatever they see. Nothing has ever happened with the sweet peas.

Almost anything planted near chickens will be destroyed, but we have sweat pea (flowers) growing all over the place and the chickens have shown no interest whatsoever in eating them and for some reason don't bother to scratch them to death either. Only blackberries and rosemary are as resistant to murder most foul.

Funny, my chickens thought they were caviar when I grew them. Then again, I grew all extra spicy/smelly breeds, so that may have made a difference.

Yeah, they never got sick - just ate whatever they could crane their necks out to. I used to throw the trim in their coop when I trimmed, too.

The nice thing I have learned about my chickens is that if it is not good for them they leave it alone. For instance we have some barley mix that a brewing friend gave us (he had extra he wasn't going to use). It is a mix of roasted and dried. They eat all the white ones and leave every single black one. Won't even eat them out of my hand. Funny.
About plants. I have had horrible luck with planting and having my chickens kill in two scratches all of my work. This last summer I started putting chicken wire on the ground so the plants could grow up and out but chickens couldn't scratch very well. It has been working with my clamatis vine! I will try some sweet peas this year, sounds pretty.
