i'm new to this tribe, so i'm sorry if this has been talked about before...
i have four crazy cuties that are almost two weeks old. when can i start introducing them to the outside world, where i really feel they belong? i really want to let them run around...........
i have the 'keeping chickens' book, but i'd like some other opinions
thanks!

Re: taking the little-uns outside
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 9:47 PMI started taking my ladies out for short walks through the grass just two days after I got them, and they were 2 days old when we picked them out.
They started staying outside for an hour or two at about 2-3 weeks, and then each week we added a little more time until they were out in the yard all day and only in with their "nightlight' at night about 2 months or so.
I didn't read that book personally, but did what I thought would happen in the real world, and all of mine made it just fine, so it musta been okay.
I do not have any other outdoor pets in my yard and rarely see anything other than other birds or squirrels (and the occasional coon or possum) out there, so perhaps we just lucked out in them not contracting any weird diseases?

Re: taking the little-uns outside
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 10:28 AMas long as they are warm enough, there's nothing wrong with them being outside.
we put them in a small pen in our yard (enclosed on all sides, so they can't fly out the top, and so nothing can get in to them, either... like hawks or cats)
