My chickens were attacked during the night and it's pretty sad..
I found out that a raccoon attacked my chickens and i have 2 chickens.
1 chicken is fine( i havnt found any injury), but my other chicken's head got scalped...
it's not dead, but it's really injured.
The red part of the chicken's head came off and everything under it is visible.
I put some anti virius cream, but i need help..
The back part of the chicken is also hurt, there's a visible cut..
What should i do..?

Nutritious Food, Warmth and Water
Thu, November 20, 2008 - 7:03 PMIf there are only two chickens, it is better to keep them together unless the well one is pecking the injured one. When a small animal such as a chicken is injured, the main danger is from shock and infection, so try to get it somewhere which is relatively stress-free. Perhaps place them in a bathtub? If the chicken is warm, has nutritious food and plenty of water, the chances are very good that it will recover. A dab of antibiotic cream on the wound can't hurt, but the main thing is giving the bird what it needs to heal.
Whether the chicken lives or not, you'll want to harden the coop so that raccoons cannot get in, because they will try. If the chicken dies, it would be better to either get another chicken or give yours away, because chickens are social animals and don't do as well alone.
I am sorry to hear about your bird, but chickens can recover from some pretty gruesome-looking injuries. Good luck! -

Re: Nutritious Food, Warmth and Water
Fri, November 21, 2008 - 11:53 PMthank you i'll try this.
the thing is though that it's not eating, it's sleeping all the time now.
We gave it some healing cream that also protects.
Do you think that if we still kept it in it's coop, it' wont be warm?
We have no place to put it besides the coop. -

Re: Nutritious Food, Warmth and Water
Sat, November 22, 2008 - 9:59 AMif the chicken is getting picked on, you may want to put him in a small rabbit sized cage, inside your big one with food and water, it needs time to heal

Re: Chicken attacked and now is injured
Sat, November 22, 2008 - 10:42 AMTake a box that is big enough for the chicken to turn around in and put some fabric in the bottom. This can be place anywhere but the bathroom is ideal as you can usually close the door. I usually just put a light piece of cloth over the top of the box so that air and a little light can get in.
As for food go get some baby food the first stage kind. Also pick up a good sized dropper. This will be your food for your bird. Mix some water with the food and try to gently feed your bird. Electrolytes would be good too.
I have had some success in stiching up wounds on my chickens and turkeys. The head injury will have to heal by itself. Keep using the antibiotic cream or better yet I use colloidial silver from a good health food store. You can also give this to the bird internally.
Good luck. -

Re: Chicken attacked and now is injured
Mon, November 24, 2008 - 2:25 AMthank you.
the chicken is healing from everyone's advice.
it's not isolating it self anymore, so that's good.
it's starting to walk around like it usually does and it's starting to eat.
now all i gotta watch out for is infection.
