i have to say, now that we are finally getting eggs--they are big and brown and beautiful! very good layers of large eggs--the roosters are known to top at 20 lbs! they are slow to mature though, but good temperment too. they are a fairly rare breed, i recommend them!!

Tue, January 22, 2008 - 9:51 AMThey have huge feet too =)
I switched from Jerseys to Orpingtons because I loved how gentle the Roosters were. That is just my opinion though, because I did have a couple of sweet Jersey roos.

Wed, March 5, 2008 - 10:35 AMOnce we have space for chickens, we want Jersey giants or buff orpingtons. Our family seems to like the big, heavy breeds. -

Wed, March 5, 2008 - 11:10 PMI've never had Jersey Giants but I have had Orpingtons. I think Orpingtons are by far the best natured hens I have ever had. A friend of mine had nine black Jersey Giants and a rooster. When they were out on a green lawn they were a spectacular sight. -

Re: jersey giants
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 3:10 PMWe had some buff orpingtons and I have never met such mean birds! They were so vicious. Now they are all in my freezer, except one rooster who is a bit on the camp side. He seems to think I am a hen and keeps doing that 'special cluck' that roosters do to tell the hen they have found food. Bless.
Most of my other hens are smaller. But I do have some Brahmas. Lovely big birds, not eaten any yet though. I have never come across Jersey giants. Are they used mainly as a meat bird? -

Re: jersey giants
Fri, March 28, 2008 - 5:42 AMi suppose. they are late to mature, didn't get eggs until dec...but laying good now.
we recently ate one, and the meat is grisly and tougher than others...so then we boiled another thinking it was just the way we cooked it, but no...
