i think a few of our hens have leg mites... they burrow under their leg skin and make them look aweful and scaley. i've read to dip them (legs only!) in petroleum and kerosene. anybody have any ideas about the best way to treat our gals? thanks!

Re: leg mites?
Mon, March 3, 2008 - 5:36 PMI have had lots of problems with my silkies and leg mites, I have learned through trial and error, that spraying them with Adams Flea and Tick, then spraying them with Red Scarlet oil, knocks them out completely. I don't have to use a repeat treatment with that method.
The petroleum and kerosene... I have used both, really didn't work for me, I have also tried the smothering them in vasolene (sp) and vegetable oil, didn't work. -

Mon, March 3, 2008 - 10:39 PMI've never had this problem but have read that straw can be the culprit. I only use pine shaving for my litter and nesting box. -

Re: leg mites?
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 8:41 AMhi folks! two questions lisa, what is red scarlet oil/ where do i find it? and are the eggs safe to eat after i apply the adams flea stuff? last year when we treated our gals for feather mites we had to wait 21days before eating the eggs. -

Tue, March 4, 2008 - 7:51 PMRed Scarlet Oil
You were right.. it wasn't easy to find when I typed it in as I wrote "red scarlet oil" its an old school way of asking for it at your feed store. They will then point me in the direction of this product.
www.kyhorse.com/store/heal...redkote.htm
I love the stuff, use it on all my animals if we have problems, keeps the flies away and also when my hens are getting too much attention from the roosters I spray it on their bare (no feathers, looks tender) backs. Keeps them safe from the "love" for a few days and any cuts on the back can heal.
As far as the time it takes before egg consumption. I have NO idea, what I do is wait until I don't see the red on the feet and then I know its been absorbed or rubbed off. I then will eat the eggs. If you are selling Organic, I'm sure you won't be able to use these products. Honestly, I don't have a good answer to that. Its gooey and smelly so it may not be something you are interested in, but it does disappear really fast and I only have to treat once.
It rubs off in about a week or less around here, but we free range so the grasses could be helping ..

Re: leg mites?
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 12:15 PMI use a combo of jojoba and tea tree oil. I make up a container of it and just dip there feet/leg in it for a few seconds to let it get in there. No worries about eating the eggs afterwards.
I never heard of straw being a culprit. I think that I will have to change bedding material. -

Re: leg mites?
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 8:22 PMmites can come from other birds too, since I free range I am always checking for bugs and what not.
I would also like to clarify, I spray the entire bird with Adams, under wings, fluff up the bottom feathers (and give a light spray), legs and I never spray the heads, then I spray the Red Scarlet Oil only to the legs. Sorry about that, I have been working too much and talking too fast. -
