I'm getting ready to order my spring chicks. My local hatchery is offering a breed called welsummer. They are Dutch and lay the dark brown eggs. Has anyone have any experience with this breed? What kind of layers are they?

Thanks for the reply. I don't have to worry about hardy as my hens get the royal treatment. What I was wondering is their egg laying ability or lac k of. I like to keep hens that are productive as I give eggs to neighbors and friends. I'm thinking about taking a chance and getting a couple.

Re: Welsummer
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 6:01 PMI have had a small flock of Welsummers for the past 3 years.. They are decent layers, though in the wet winters they do seem to drop off more than my other hens.. The only characteristic that I dont like is that they seem to be much more flighty than my other breeds. Granted their DARK brown eggs are pretty cool, but you can get the same color eggs from Marans without the flighty nature. -

Sun, March 29, 2009 - 11:19 AMI don't have experience with Welsummers, but I did order some and they're due to arrive here at my Central Pennsylvania home the middle of April. I chose Welsummers over Marans because I'd read that Marans weren't quite as hardy (cold weather) as Welsummers. Marans sound like sweet little chickies, though, and I'm hoping my Wesummers will become good pets as well as good layers. I know they're not as prolific (layers) as some, but I do like the idea of those chocolate brown eggs :-)
