so back october/november the ladies stopped laying ...pretty much expected; it's cold, it's dark and I don't use supplemental lighting. I don't bother checking the nests for a few weeks and then this past week I peek in just to see how everything is doing in there and, WOW!! ... I have about two dozen eggs from three laying hens and I've been getting an egg a day from each of them since. I'm happy as pie, but what's going on?

Re: eggs, eggs, EGGS!!!
Wed, December 12, 2007 - 9:13 AMI thought the lack of laying was due to molt, not lighting? so if they didn't molt, they would continue to lay? -

Wed, December 12, 2007 - 4:59 PMyou know my girls all are in some stage of molt and I am getting zero eggs, last winter they were not molting and I got zero eggs...I chalked it up to day length and temparature but I could be wrong.

Re: eggs, eggs, EGGS!!!
Fri, December 14, 2007 - 11:23 AMwe seem to be getting about 3 or 4 eggs per week, per chicken. (we can't quite tell who's laying, and since they are all very young still, its only one or two of them.) We're in California, but its been cold days, and long nights.

Fri, December 14, 2007 - 6:05 PMGrrrr. No eggs here at all as of yet, and we have had the ladies since the first of June... I keep hoping, but think that it got cold and dark all at once, so will probably have to wait longer. -

Re: eggs, eggs, EGGS!!!
Sun, December 16, 2007 - 6:54 PMHey Loch... I had new chicks the year before last and the eggs took a long time in coming. This spring when we added the new chicks to the old (laying/mature) hens they were like lightning bults of insticts and see/do activity. They started laying late this summer. My older hens stopped laying and started multing for about a month or so. The one has gotten back into laying but the other one still isn't. I think the happier my hens are, most cofortable, loved, entertained, they feel safe...yes all emotional, the more likely they are to lay. The rooster seems to have favorites that he will gard and what not. I think one of the little ladies is still not laying. That is why I blame it all on the community that they have created and I help support. Good luck all. Oh, about 2 eggs a day here in Oregon with 5 hens, 1 rooster. -

Re: eggs, eggs, EGGS!!!
Sun, December 16, 2007 - 8:13 PMI have three bantams about 7 months. Only one has been laying so far, for about a month and the minute it got cooler, done.
I suppose the banties are abit more finnicky then full size chickens. They are free range and barely touch their seed food. -

Re: eggs, eggs, EGGS!!!
Mon, December 17, 2007 - 6:24 PMFound 25 eggs cached under my Stipa gigantea this weekend. Those tricky females!
Hard to say how long they've been working on their little collection. Still fresh by the bowl of water test. Omelettes for all!
