I have about five broody turkey hens all crammed together in a dog house in their run. All of my chickens see partial to laying in that dog house even though there are other places or them to lay. The hens are sitting on many, many eggs of all poultry variety including ducks. my question is is what to do about the amazing funk that is emanating from the dog house. I don't want to disturb the hens and it is never completely devoid of a bird so I cant remove the broken rotten eggs/eggs.
oh my god is stinks!! I just hope that they hatch something soon. it has been a while but how many days I cant be sure.

Tue, May 19, 2009 - 10:46 PMOh, that is strange, my hens usually push the bad ones out of the nest. Is their a ledge holding them in? Can you peak inside and see if any eggs are outside of their nest? -

Thu, May 21, 2009 - 6:45 AMit is a sea o eggs in their. I found two eggs that were kicked out of the nest (PEEE UUUU!) but I know there are more bad ones inside. I checked on of the hens when she got our of the dog house and she is covered with the rank smell, poor thing. The flies seem to like it. i hope they hatch soon, it's awful.

Fri, May 22, 2009 - 4:20 AMyou know Lisa I checked yesterday and there was another egg booted out of the nest. Youre right there is a lip on the exit that must be making it difficult for the to get the bad ones out. Once they are done with this batch I will cut that out.

Fri, May 22, 2009 - 10:51 AMyou really have a hodgepodge of eggs in there too, I would (for next time) get your pencil and mark dates on the eggs and then, make sure one hen has ducks and one has turkey and one has chicken, they have different hatch dates. So if she get up with her little chicks, those little turks are going to die two days from their hatch date. www.dpi.qld.gov.au/cps/rde/..._HTML.htm and if you have varying set dates, that could be a problem, I will actually pull eggs, carefully, mark with pencil, put in an open egg carton and wait for the hen to set, once that happens I push in all my intended eggs at once. Carefully handle, nothing on your hands and they will have a better hatch.

Mon, June 1, 2009 - 5:17 AMI also have a Cayuga duck that is diligently sitting on her nest far away from discusto nest. Looks like she has about 9 eggs in there. though the turkeys eggs seem to be dwindling . It looks like an unhealthy nest and I am anxious to get it out of there, any day now. I wonder if the unsanitary conditions could cause the eggs to die, it seems strange that i haven't had any hatching yet and I don't feel very hopeful. there were so many eggs too : ( -

Mon, June 1, 2009 - 9:46 AMI'm a huge fan of candling my eggs, if there are too many in a nest the hens won't properly turn them or keep them warm. One may slip out of her nest only to be pushed back in later. I don't let a large amount under one hen just for that reason. You can bring out your flashlight at night and one by one candle to see what you've got and just toss the ones that are spidering (underdeveloped for this stage of incubation) or clear. Look for dead chicks, oozing eggs or even cold eggs go ahead and toss them. Even if you get it down to three healthy eggs it's better than none. If you do it at night they settle down faster and you can just push them back under her without a major fuss or chance of her running off for the day. -

Thu, June 4, 2009 - 4:30 AMI ousted the turkeys. they immediately went and found somebody elses eggs to sit on. They go tit bad! Gotta sit, gotta sit! A chicken snuck back in and is insisting on sitting on the eggs, there are only about 3 in there now. I am really surprised considering how many there were to begin with but what you said about the turning makes sense. I am going to have to burn the dog house, no washing its beyond that. My duck is being a faithful mum, I have high hopes for her clutch.
We ordered 60 Cornish Cross day olds. they should be here by the end of June. I have mixed feelings about using genetic freaks as apposed to slow food, but the feed to meat ratio is hard to beat. -
