New to chickens

And obviously new to this tribe, but I do see a few faces I recognize from other tribes. :)

So we've decided to dive into the world of chickens. This is a whole new thing to me, and I've already learned a lot. There also seems to be a lot of good info on this tribe, but to be honest I'm not even sure where to begin!

I'm thinking of taking on 3 hens and a rooster that are about 6 months old and due to start laying anytime now (well, not the rooster, obviously). I have a 12x12 covered pen that I will house them in, but I need to do something quickly for nesting boxes, even if it's just temporary. I have found many simple plans online, but I may be picking these little guys up tomorrow, so I need some ideas I can implement on a whim. I'd also welcome ideas for a permanent setup.

In addition to that, what challenges does a rooster present? Do I need to make any special arrangements, or does he just go in with the hens? I wasn't planning on having a rooster, but he comes with the flock....

General feeding guidelines/suggestions appreciated, too, as well as anything else that would be good to know right this minute.

Thanks in advance!

If you don't want fertilised eggs then eat the rooster. He wont hurt anything if you leave him with them except for being a typical man and driving his women crazy. hehehe! 12x12 should be fine. Don't panic about laying boxes the hens will lay on the ground if theres noplace else and sometimes do even if there is.

How much noise can we expect from a rooster? Is he going to drive us nuts?

I would let them out of the pen during the day, anyway. Right now the pen is just chain link, can I just make simple covering/siding for wind, sun, etc.? Is that really adequate?

Depends on how close to nuts you are now. And how close you windows are to the pen. He'll make some noise you can bet, but I've got about 15 roosters right at the moment and they don't bother me. I love listening to the chickens annd the roosters. I even have Tom turkeys they're real noisemakers

One more thing about the rooster I should mention. Some roosters turn mean. Not all, but some. You wanna make sure you keep his spurs trimmed that way if he surprises you thats all it is is a surprise and not an injury.

As for cover. Yea anything to block the wind in the winter will work. Alot of people modify rabbit hutchs to avoid making something from scratch. Just depends on how harsh the winter is were your at. Shade is a must in the heat of summer.

We can slap some plywood up to the sides of the pen for now, while we work on something better. Some of the ideas I found online involved using old dressers and such, pretty interesting actually, so maybe I'll make a trip by the thrift store tomorrow, too.

I'm in Ventura, in Southern California, so winters are fairly mild, but can have short bursts of frost (I'm at 2400 ft.), which we are done with for this year. Summers get very hot (as can spring and autumn), and we can get some pretty strong wind at any time of the year.

              Thanks for all your input!

<<how close to nuts you are now>>

So close that I'm not sure a noisy rooster would really make a difference. However, my husband is not too crazy about having one.

          :)

I've got a friend who uses an old truck-topper shell for a henhouse. Opens the back in the morning and the chickens all troop out.
He's just got cardboard boxes with straw piled in them for nesting boxes. When it's cleaning time, he just tips it on it's side and cleans! It's really pretty clever.

I built a chicken tractor, but it took me WAY longer than it would have to just go get an old shell off the back of a truck. *sigh*

I ended up picking up the chickens Friday, rooster and all. I was really glad I did, as they were in this tiny little pen, up against a fence, more tarped over than I thought they should be, and I don't think they got much human interaction. They ran when I threw some crumbles out. They really didn't know what vegetables were. I put a large cardboard box in with them with some dried grass.

Saturday morning we awoke to the soft melody of the rooster at 0615. Went for about 5 minutes, then again for about 5 minutes at 0635. Then not again till just after 0800. I can live with that.

Mid morning we decided to move the whole pen to a better location, so I loaded the birds into the box. They'd been in there about 30 minutes or so, and I went to check on them, and there was an egg! Very exciting, as they had not laid any before I brought them home. We've had one egg a day since, from two different hens I believe, due to the size discrepancy, and today we got two!

We built them a house over the weekend, but we are letting the paint vent a little longer (we slapped some paint on to make it more weather durable). We'll put that in tomorrow or Thursday.

We're having fun so far. Even my husband admits the rooster's not that bad. :) They are loving the wild grasses growing in the pen, and are getting used to the fruits and veggies I'm tossing in. They are getting much more comfortable with us humans. The neighbor's cows that have been wandering through seem rather fond of them, too!

I will post some pictures soon, and maybe someone can tell me what kind they are...???

          They *are* awesome!

Karl, I thought for a minute that was going to be a link to a butcher!

So yesterday we had no eggs, and today we got three! This morning we had our first breakfast... yum!

I posted a few photos in the album. The two black and white ones are a bit skittish still, but better. The little black hen is cute as a button, will run up to me every time I go in the pen, and pecks at my feet. The pecking is getting less, though, and she will let me pick her right up and will ride under my arm while I am in there. She also likes to be massaged on the back. My aunt says she has figured out how to NOT get sent to the butcher... :) And as for the rooster, he's a bit silly, too. A little shy, but very curious.

Thanks for all the great info and input!
