Hi, I'm karlynmeow. I'm interested in getting started with having a chicken flock.
Any advice or reference materials anyone would ecommend?
What are some challenges to having chickens in an urban area versus rural?
Thank you.

Re: getting started
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 10:02 AMIn Urban areas you need to check with your local code, to see how many chickens you can keep. For instance here in San jose Ca, you can keep 4 to 6 chickens depending on how close the coop will be to your neighbours property. And of course no roosters in Urban areas. Altough when I apologized to my neighbours for my rooster and told them I had taken it back to the farm, many were dissapointed because they liked the crowing in the morning.
SO yes it pays to check with neighbours. -

Re: getting started
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 1:43 PMThe advice checklist:
1. Don't do roosters unless you REALLY want one.
2. Its more expensive in set up costs to hatch eggs, but it is fun. You'll have higher mortality, so if watching fluffy chicks die is more than you are up for, go for day old chicks. I would get chicks for just starting out.
3. Find out what the "Filler Chick" policy is for your vendor (McMurray or Stromberg have both done well for me.) Nothing like ordering 4 and getting 30 to add a little excitement to your day.
4. I keep my new chicks indoors in a cheap plastic kid's swimming pool for the first couple of weeks with a warming lamp. Not only does it help them through the transition, but they are very fun to watch.
5. Don't freak out when they stop laying eggs and loose their feathers in the winter. It just happens sometimes.
6. Do it! Keeping chickens is a blast. -

Re: getting started
Fri, August 14, 2009 - 3:32 PMAs far as I know they still exchange roosters. I took mine as soon as they started crowing.
my two bantam roosters I kept abit longer because they were so beautiful and sweet and my son realy got attached to them, but in the end I had to let them go.
of course if i had known then that my neighbours found it rather charming I wouldn't have let them go. -

Fri, August 14, 2009 - 4:18 PMThey are beautiful. I think if/when I get some, I will spend hours sketching and painting them. Hey, multipurpose! But I don't suppose they'll pose. -
