winter concern for "bald" chickens- thoughts?

Ok, so we have about three or four hens who have some pretty severe bald patches on their backs - you know, from the over-amorous attentions of the boys. :rolls eyes: Most of the girls have done their molting thing and are all grown back and ready for the winter (here in NJ, it's already frosting over at night now) but these few haven't as of yet.

I'm not so worried about them during the night- we put an infrared lamp on a thermostat in the coop to help everyone stay warm once the temps are hovering in the really cold - but i'm not sure if there's anything we can do to help protect them during the day when they roam. We have to grease the comb (vaseline) of one of our roosters at night during the winter to protect him from frostbite - but I'm not so sure that would be a reasonable thing to do for the much bigger exposed areas on the girls.

So, any thoughts, folks? ^^;

    Hi.... I'm in need of info. about keeping my rooster healthy during the NJ winter. It looks like his feet are getting a pinkish color to them. Any thoughts you can share???

        Wendi, sounds like rubbing them with oil like Jo. But if you can't get to them/him what if you made sure there pin has a lot of straw and I use cedar nettles from the trees around. If is is really bad my friend in Alaska made a cabin just for his chickens. It was insulated and had a heater and heat lamp. It was like the tropics in there. His chickens were so happy and he got lots of eggs all year round. Big investment but maybe something half as elaborate.

      Hi Wendi!

      Our guys toes get the pinkish hue too, in the winter. Their feet are pretty tough, though. I

      f your boy's got a large comb and wattle, though, I would recommend "greasing the rooster" at night when it gets below freezing. (as well as making sure they have a heated space for at night - we bought a greenhouse thermostat (really, just a plug in thing) that clicks on a heat lamp when it gets below freezing at night to keep the coop warm enough, along with straw and wood shaving bedding)

      Our rooster greasing regimen involves vaseline and neosporin. If anything looks frost-bitten (i.e. turning black), gently put some neosporin on it to keep bacteria at bay and then slather everything with vaseline (obviously, you can skip the neosporin if nothing's gotten frostbitten yet)
