has anybody ever grown quinoa for their chickens? are the saponins toxic to them? does it HAVE to be washed first?

Fri, May 30, 2008 - 1:49 PMI don't know if the saponins are toxic to chickens; they aren't to humans, but they greatly affect the taste. Best to wash (rinse) the seeds first -- and then you can use the water afterward to wash your clothes with, the way they do in Bolivia! -

You can eat the leaves, of course. Quinoa is in the spinach family. -

Tue, September 2, 2008 - 8:44 AMwild amaranth is closely related to quinoa and grows all over my area of so cal. Chickens and people can eat its tender greens. The chickens like the seed heads, but they are a pain in the ass for me to use for human consumption. More for them! :)
