Hi folks. One of my hens was found dead on the floor of the coop today. She was young, about a year old, perfectly healthy and fine this morning. Any thoughts on what may have happened? About a year ago, I had the same experience finding a beautiful, otherwise healthy rooster dead on the floor. I don't get it, but want to make sure it doesn't happen any more! Thoughts, please....

Re: Unexplained chicken death... Ideas?
Mon, November 3, 2008 - 9:45 PMThat's the freaky part - she was fine that morning, no predators got into the coop, no freeze etc. Wouldn't know about the egg bound... I suppose it's a possibility but don't know much about how that happens. Her neck was really floppy when I found her and I thought maybe if she got spooked and flew into the pole that they roost on and broke her neck? Seems unlikely, but it's all I could come up with. This same thing happened one other time about a year and a half ago, only it was a rooster then. No roosters now at all in the picture.
Thanks for thinking about it. -

Re: Unexplained chicken death... Ideas?
Tue, November 4, 2008 - 10:02 AMhmm, not sure, I would need a bit more to go on.. I accidentally killed a chicken with rock salt last year, didn't know it was poisonous and I was salting my hay.
Umm.. no bloody stools then or running nose.. sorry, no help unless we had some more clothes. I can only speculate, some sort of poisoning, rat poison?
I've lost a few first years from being egg bound, but there are signs of stress just before death.
sorries again ;(
