I have no idea what kind they are. I got them at about 6 months old from a private party (they didn't know). I posted a few photos awhile back in the tribe album, maybe you would have an idea? I tried to do some internet searching, but there are sooo many different breeds I couldn't pin it down. All I know is the little black one is the surrogate, and the white ones with the black heads are the donors. And of course the fuzzy, funny looking rooster is the "other" donor.

My luck both these eggs will hatch roosters... :P

AAAaaawww, that's nice of you, yea, just let her be, some are just born momma's. Only advice I have, I don't know what kind of chickens you have, but I have silkies and orpingtons, the orpingtons will eat a newly hatched baby so I separate my silkies until the babies are a little bigger and faster.

just sit back and enjoy your little peeps to be =)

I feel like I have spent the majority of the last two days in the chicken coop. I keep pulling her out, she keeps going back in (despite no eggs in there). I have dunked her in the water trough repeatedly (just her lower half), jostled her out of her trance, gotten her to eat, and yesterday afternoon I removed all the hay from the boxes after the other two hens laid for the day. That seemed to work for a longer period of time, but then she eventually got in and settled down in the empty box. I waited til dark and took her out and put her with the others at the bottom where they huddle together for the night. She seemed to be fine there, then this morning she was huddled in a bottom corner sitting. After a while she moved up to an empty box. She has not laid an egg for the past 3 days.

I give up. I gave her today's two eggs from the other chickens. She is now contentedly sitting upon them. Perhaps the black hen will be hatching white chickens in 3 weeks. :)

Any thoughts you have are appreciated, otherwise I'm just winging it (oops- no pun intended).

Put your hen in a separate cage for a week, with wire mesh on the bottom. The wire will be uncomfortable for sitting on, and should get her out of the broody mood. If that doesn't work, you can dunk her in very cold water several times, which should shock her out of broodiness and get her to start laying again.

I can't take the nest out, it is part of one large unit. Looks something like this...

________
|__|__|__|
|__|__|__|
|_______|

She never did lay an egg yesterday, but doesn't seem in any distress when I pull her out. I don't want to interrupt the egg laying part, but I'll just keep pulling her out if she stays in there too long.

Thanks for all your input.

take her nest away if she does it again tomorrow, let her lay an egg in the dirt, she won't like that and it will be distracting to the broody mood she may be getting into.

She keeps going back in there and just sitting, and I keep going in and pulling her out. Right now she is still out, so hopefully she's done being insistent.

Ok, I just pulled her out. She made a funny little squealy noise, but otherwise seems ok, and out of her "trance". Thanks!

Egg bound was my initial thought, til I realized the uncollected eggs were not in any of the other cubby holes. And two of the eggs she was sitting on were hers, so she is definitely not egg bound. :)

She was sitting on a very happy 5 eggs, the oldest of which are from yesterday afternoon. There's no need to worry about consuming them, due to the extra sitting time, right?

yes yes, pushing her out early, fast as possible should disrupt that broodie feel they get that is almost impossible to stop when in full motion

push her off
go for it
it won't hurt her

Make sure she isn't pushing or looks distressed after you do, then maybe she is egg bound, that is the scariest to think of

My little black hen has been in the nesting box for the last 5 hours, maybe longer, as she has been in there since I first went out this morning. She's in that "I'm-laying-an-egg" trance. But she is also sitting on the eggs that were laid yesterday afternoon that I hadn't gotten a chance to collect. Sometimes when they lay them later in the day, I don't get them til the next morning. But she's been on them since I got up. I wouldn't mind having chicks, but I really don't want any more roosters. Can I force her out, without upsetting her? And is she in fact incubating them, or is something else wrong?

Thanks in advance.
